The death of George Floyd and the subsequent raised visibility of the Black Lives Matter movement has surfaced racism and discrimination in institutions and industries across the board.
To mark this moment in the Black Lives Matter movement, the Business Book Awards interviewed seven shortlisted and winning authors to discuss their experiences of challenges and discrimination as business people and authors, and to canvas their views on the way the BBAs could further support authors of colour.
These interviews will be released on a daily basis via the Business Book Awards Facebook Page and YouTube Channel this week, with mine being aired at midday this Sunday (19th July).
I as an Asian author and short listed for my book “Outstanding: A Leader’s Guide to Effective CQC registration” at the 2020 awards, took part in the interviews because I believe that we need to be part of the change want to see happen. I want my voice to be heard. I therefore take opportunities like this to talk about things that do not always come up on conversation. I am proud to be included in this line up and also believe we have to be part of the change we want to happen.
Lucy McCarraher is the Founder of the Business Book Awards and she is passionate about diversity and inclusion.
In 2018 when the inaugural Business Book Awards were held all of the winners were white males and this was something Lucy vowed she would tackle as she knew that there was talent from diverse communities not being recognised. In the space of a year, not only did she manage to deal with the gender in balance but also racial diversity.
Lucy made it her mission to ensure BBA had more judges from BAME backgrounds to ensure real diversity, inclusion and equality existed in the judging process.
Following the Black Lives Matter movement Lucy again felt she needed to do her bit and to ensure people from BAME communities were given a voice. She has since recorded a series of interviews with previous awards winners, to hear about their experiences of challenges and discrimination they have faced, and how we can continue to make BBAs a platform to champion the best business authors, regardless of their background.
